Course Editor - Editing Properties

Course Properties

In the course properties view, Code and Name are the mandatory properties which must be filled in.

  • Code - a unique short code for this course.
  • Name - name for this course
  • Description - short 255 character description (plain text) which appears in the lists. To enter detailed full page description or adding learning objectives, go to course details and add it there.
  • Auto Award Certificate - this property in conjunction with Auto Grading in the course session, allow having courses which enrolled candidates can complete online and get a certificate automatically. You can add a mandatory quiz in the course, and set a passing score in it. Once candidates take the quiz and score more than passing score, then they will be provided a link to download the ceritifcate in the course player, and on their transcript page. Note that Auto Award Certificate at course level must be enabled to auto calculate grades even if you don't want to enable certificate. Certificate can be turned off at course session level by using No Certificate option.
  • Duration - duration of the course. By default it gets calculated by summing up durations of all the modules. But you can override that and specify a different value.
  • Shared Resource - Once a course is created as shared resource, its lessons can be linked into other courses. While creating a new lesson, you will now get a new option to link the lesson from other courses, and will be provided a list of courses to choose from. That list will only show shared courses. Read more about sharing lessons
  • Offline Access on iPad - this property will allow users using EduBrite iPad app, to download this course's lessons to view it offline (when not connected). The downloaded files are stored in app specific local folders to disallow users to view or access them from any other application, other than EduBrite app.
  • Shareable in social networks - this property allows sharing buttons to show up when learners launch the course
  • Certificate - certificate template to use for this course. You can create custom certificate by going to CMS module. Select specific template from the configured template in the site. If no custom template is created in site, then this option would not be available.
  • Credits - default credits for the course. You can use this field to represent Credit or CEU (which is gennerally 1/10th of the credit) or Training Hours. If this course gets added in a Program, you would be able to change the credit for the course in the program later.
  • Price - default price of the course, applicable only if you create Paid courseSession
  • Don't allow global coupon code - if you have created coupon codes at the site level, which are good for all courses, this checkbox will allow you to exclude this course from accepting any global code (for paid course sessions). If you are selling a bundle of courses by creating program, then a similar field is also available in the program's editing screen which can be used to exclude programs to not accept global coupon codes.
  • Logo - logo image for the course, it is used in Course Catalog page and in the activity update on LinkedIn when sharing the course.
  • Show Outline as List - this property allows you to set display mode for outline in the course player to List View. By default outline is shown as hierarchical tree. In the list view, scorm modules, lessons and tests are shown without any module/topic hierarchy in the sequential order.

  • Expand Outline Tree - this property allows initial view of the course outline in the course player fully expanded so that all lessons and tests are visible to the learner.

  • Item Tabs - if this option is selected, then player will provide additional tabs to filter the course outline by showing just the lessons, tests, assignments or everything. This is useful in cases when your course has 100s of items divided into several modules and you want to make sure the learners don't miss any
  • List/Tree View - this option allows showing or hiding the list/tree view buttons in course outline

  • Outline on right - this option swaps the normal position of outline and content, and moves the outline to the right.

  • Lesson timers - this option enables time tracking for all lessons, regardless of lesson timing is set or not on any specific lesson

  • : - this option enables assigning weights in course quizzes, sum of all weights should be 100.

Module, Topic or Scorm Properties

Only name is mandatory field in this property view, you can optionally specify duration for the module, topic or scorm package. If not specified, then duration for module or topic is calculated by adding the durations of all the topics, scorm and lessons under it. Duration can be used to populate default start and end dates for the modules and topics when a course session gets created. Course Session can further set the property to enforce these dates to lock access to any lesson or quiz inside the module / topic.

Scorm Item Properties

For SCORM, you get few more propoerties

  • Open in new window: to specify whether SCORM will open in a new window or in same (course player) window. By default scorm is opened in same window.
  • Launch scorm automatically: as the name suggests, this setting makes the course player launch the scorm without requiring launch button to be clicked inside the player. This is useful especially when you have multiple items and you want to launch next item after the previous one is completed, without requiring user to explicitly click Launch button. Note that enabling this has a side effect that module description screen would not be visible to learners in the course player
  • Gradable: by default all modules are gradable, and would be shown in the gradebook records, but you can uncheck this option for any module which may be just a resource. Even when a module is not gradable, it can still be made mandatory to complete
  • Mandatory: make this module mandatory to complete, before any next item can be accessed in the course
  • Don't lock next lesson: don't lock next item, This property should be used along with 'Mandatory' if want to keep scorm mandatory but no locking for next item.
  • Exclude from Linking - disallow linking of this scorm, even when course is shared

Lesson Properties

Only name is mandatory field, optionally you can specify the duration of the lesson. Some of the other fields allow you to control how learners will interact with the lesson.

  • Duration - Duration of lesson is used in conjunction with Enforce Lesson Duration property in the course session, to enforce access to lesson only for specified time. E.g. you can have a lesson's duration set to  3 hours, which will enable course player to track the time lesson is watched by the learner, and disable the access after 3 hours of watching. Duration can also be used to set timing for each slide in the lesson, from the Timing tab of the lesson. Read more about Lesson timing here
  • Minimum required time - if you specify lesson duration and enable this checkbox option, then the specified duration will be considered as minimum time the lesson has to be viewed before it would be considered complete
  • Viewable anytime by members of course session - This property controls whether learners enrolled in any course session for this course can access this lesson or not. This property must be checked for all self paced courses. It can be kept unchecked for Blended or Instructor led courses.
  • Viewable without course session - This property allows enabling access to the lesson by learners who launch the course without a course session. This is useful for creating courses which are not scheduled, and are available to learners anytime in a self paced manner. The activities of learners in such instances are not recorded as part of any course session and their progress is also not tracked and reported.
  • Graded in Course Session Gradebook  - this property can be used to make some lessons (especially resources like Handouts) non gradable. If on, lesson's completion and progress is added as gradebook item
  • Mandatory to read - This property can be used to enforce learners open the lesson at least once before they can attempt the next items in the course. It is a simple way to enforce sequencing within a hierarchical course structure
  • Don't lock next lesson: don't lock next item, This property should be used along with 'Mandatory' if want to keep scorm mandatory but no locking for next item.
  • Require lesson to be fully viewed - if you have a video/audio and you want the lesson to be considered complete only when learner watches it till the end, you can enable this option. For lessons with files or online edited content, this option will allow you to enforce every page has to be opened before the lesson can be considered complete. If you have timed slides (or voiced) in lesson, it would be considered completed only when user watches the slide till the end

Setting both above options - if you set both the Minimum Required Time and Require Fully Viewed options, then lesson will be cosidered complete only when both conditions are met

  • Downloadable - This property allows a PDF version of the lesson to be downloadable by the learners from the toolbar button in the course player. Original version of the uploaded file can be downloaded from course player as well by keeping the AL T or SHIFT key pressed while clicking on Download button in the course player
  • Printable - This property allows direct printing of lessons from the course player when learners are viewing the courses.
  • Disable notes taking - This property allows to disable annotation feature for learners. To disable the annotation feature at the site level, the site admin can disable Notes feature from Site Admin->Site Details->Features tab
  • Show table of content (TOC)- this property enables showing hierarchy of topics contained inside a PDF, DOC or Presentation file uploaded for the lesson.

  • Fit content - This property controls the lesson display in course player. If checked, the lesson is stretched to fit the entire space if the course player content region. For the video lessons, this option is auto selected,  which causes video to scale and occupy full space while maintaining the aspect ratio. For presentations (landscape) you should enable this property to fit the slide within the available space.
  • Disable auto next - This property controls whether at the end of video/audio play or timed slides play, player would move to next item in the course automatically or not. By default when a video/audio lesson or a lesson with timed slides  finishes, control moves to next item in the course
  • Show presenter notes to learners also - this property allows you to enable viewing of presentation notes (contained within uploaded powerpoint files) to learners. By default these notes are viewable only by instructor and admin
  • Exclude from Linking - disallow linking of this lesson, even when course is shared

You can make changes to Options of all lessons in a course by using Apply to All button, which would copy options from the present lesson to other lessons in the course. Note that this may also result in unwanted options getting copied. For example Fit to size is normally kept on for Videos but should be off for Word document/PDFs, and using Apply All may result in something which may not be appropriate for all lessons in your course. So review the changes carefully after using Apply to All action.

Specifying metadata for Courses

In the course editor, you can click on metadata button to open the dialog, which shows presently configured metadata in the site. You can choose the appropriate values for the course. Metadata is editable only while course is in Inactive status. If the course is published, re-edit it to add/edit the metadata. Metadata is used to provide filtering of items in the catalog.
